New paint or carpet smell after you move in

Easy · About 15 minutes

Where I am
The apartment has a sharp chemical smell.
Where I want to be
Air that smells like nothing.
What's in the way
Fresh paint and flooring give off fumes for days.

Try this first, free: Open every window and run a fan blowing out for a few hours each day.

The fix

  1. Open windows on both sides of the home and run a fan blowing out.
  2. Keep bedding and clothes covered or in another room until the smell fades.
  3. Run a purifier with a carbon filter in the room that smells most.
  4. Leave the heat or AC off the first few days if you can, so the air can clear.

What this won't fully fix: Airing out works with time. A strong chemical smell can take days or weeks to fade fully.
