Cooking & hallway smells

No range hood, or one that just recirculates

Easy · About 20 minutes

Where I am
The smell and grease stay in the room.
Where I want to be
A way to push cooking air outside.
What's in the way
Some hoods only filter and send the air back out into the room.

Try this first, free: Open the window nearest the stove and run a plain fan beside it, blowing out.

The fix

  1. Set a small box fan in the window nearest the stove, blowing out. Open another window on the opposite side so air flows through.
  2. Turn the fan on before you start cooking and leave it on ten minutes after.
  3. If the hood recirculates, clean or swap its filter so it works better.
  4. Keep fan blades and cords away from steam and splatter.

What this won't fully fix: A window fan pulls most smoke and steam out, but it isn't a real vent. It works better with a cross breeze.

Moving out: Take the fan out and wipe the sill. There is nothing to undo.
