Hallway smells creep in under the front door
- Where I am
- You smell the whole floor's dinners when you walk in.
- Where I want to be
- A front door that keeps the hallway out.
- What's in the way
- There's a gap under the door and around the frame.
Try this first, free: Slide a rolled towel along the bottom of the door. If the hallway smell drops, the gap is your route.
The fix
- Close the door and look for light at the bottom and sides.
- Stick a door sweep on the bottom of the door and check it still swings freely.
- Press foam weatherstrip on the frame sides and top.
- Use a fabric draft stopper while you're home if you want extra help.
What this won't fully fix: A sweep closes the gap but not the keyhole and walls. A little hallway smell may still reach you.
Moving out: Peel the sweep off slowly and wipe the glue away with dish soap.
